7 Features a Good Prayer Counter App Should Have
A practical checklist for choosing a digital tasbih or japa mala counter, based on what I considered while building Beadly.
A digital tasbih or japa mala counter looks like the simplest kind of app: tap, and a number goes up. But small design choices decide whether it helps your practice or gets in the way. Here are seven features I think a good prayer counter should have. I considered them while building Beadly.
1. Counting without the screen
You should not have to look at the phone while you pray or meditate. The best counters let you count with the hardware volume buttons while the screen is off, so you can keep your eyes closed and your phone in your pocket.
2. A configurable target
Different traditions use different numbers. A japa mala usually has 108 beads. A tasbih often uses 33 or 99. A good app lets you set your own target and shows progress toward it.
3. Clear progress at a glance
A progress ring or bar tells you how far you are in the round without reading numbers. Large tap areas help too, because you may not be looking carefully at the screen.
4. A gentle signal at the end of a round
Sound or vibration when a round finishes means you do not need to watch the counter. Look for an option to turn either of them off.
5. History and streaks
Seeing your rounds per day, a weekly chart, and a monthly calendar helps you build a habit. A streak counter gives a small, honest reason to return tomorrow.
6. Dark mode and readable text
Many people pray early in the morning or late at night. A dark theme and a clear font make the app easier on the eyes.
7. Privacy and no clutter
A prayer counter should not ask for your contacts, location, or microphone. It should also not cover the screen with pop-ups. Check the permissions before you install, and read the app's privacy policy if one is provided.

Beadly, my free Android prayer counter, was designed around these points. You can download it from the App Store page. If you have installed APKs before, great. If not, here is a guide to installing an APK safely.
