How to Install an Android APK Safely
A plain step-by-step guide to installing an APK on Android without putting your phone or data at risk.
An APK is the file format Android uses to install apps. Most people get apps from Google Play, but you can also install an APK directly. Developers often share APKs for new apps, testing, or apps that are not yet in a store. It is safe when you do it carefully.
Step 1: Download from a source you trust
This is the most important step. An APK from a random website can contain malware. Only download from the developer's own website or a source you know. If a site you have never heard of offers a "free premium" version of a paid app, avoid it.
Step 2: Allow installs from your browser
Android blocks installs from outside the Play Store by default. To allow it for one app:
- Open the APK file you downloaded.
- Android will say that installing from this source is blocked. Tap Settings.
- Turn on Allow from this source for your browser or file manager.
The exact wording changes between Android versions and phone brands, but the idea is the same. On older phones, the setting is called Unknown sources under Security.
Step 3: Install the app
Go back, tap Install, and wait a few seconds. When it finishes, tap Open.
Step 4: Turn the permission off again
After installing, go back to the same setting and turn Allow from this source off. That way nothing else can install itself through your browser later.
Check what the app asks for
When the app opens, it may ask for permissions. Ask yourself whether each one makes sense. A prayer counter does not need your contacts or your location. If a permission looks unrelated to what the app does, deny it.
Keep it updated
APKs do not update through Google Play. Visit the developer's page from time to time to download newer versions.
Try it with a real app
If you want to practise, you can download my free prayer bead counter, Beadly, from the App Store page. Read more about it in this post about Beadly.
